So what’s the problem with lifting free weights straight away? You are far more likely to be injured if you haven’t learnt the correct technique, this includes the way you perform the exercise, and your posture throughout the movement.

Machines hold your body in position while performing the exercise; they also glide in the correct movement path; you are much less likely to strain a joint, ligament, or muscle. The negative thing about machines is that they really only isolate a muscle rather than working multiple muscles like compound or free weight exercises.

It really comes down to how comfortable you are with training, for instance if you have been playing sport and have been active for a long time you are more likely to step in a gym and perform compound exercises, whereas if you have never lifted weight or are inactive it may be best to start with machines.

Either way, machines and free weights yield fantastic results

 

If you decide to jump straight into free weights and you’re a beginner, follow these guidelines.

Keep rep ranges low – this is to ensure you focus on perfect reps, this way muscular fatigue becomes less of a factor.

Focus on one big lift per workout – if you use too many taxing exercises you are more likely to fatigue and compromise form.

Mind muscle connection – during the lift try to focus on the muscle you are lifting, this way you ensure all muscle fibers are being activated.

Be patient– it takes time to learn how to control a movement correctly, trying to beat your PB early on may result in slack form.
